My big race was this Saturday!

I couldn’t go!

Earlier this week, I was running in preparation for my upcoming race, and pushed myself to go further than I ever had before.  I went 4.5 miles!!  After my run, I iced my knees like I usually do and I noticed my back felt sore.  I didn’t worry too much about it because I just ran a lot, but the pain continued to get worse all week!  Wearing heels to work definitely didn’t help either.  The pain in my lower back was excruciating!  I was really reconsidering participating in Saturday’s race.  On Thursday night I finally went to see a massage therapist.  She said my muscles were super tight and thinks I pulled one of my glute muscles.  Ouch!  The deep tissue massage was SO painful, but it did help ease the pain afterwards.

The massage therapist advised me to sit this race out, and I knew that would be best for me as well.  I am so bummed I had to miss my race!  I was completely prepared for it!  It’s frustrating that my body failed me.

There’s always another race, so I’ll get over it.   I definitely don’t want to cause any more damage, so I’m going to try to take it easy.  I hope to pick up my Bridge to 10k training later this week and see how I feel.

  1. I'm glad you trusted your gut (and the massage therapist) and sat this one out. Better safe than sorry! There will be plenty more races for you to take part in!

And I know what you mean about feeling like your body is failing you... I've had horrible back pain over the past week too. No fun at all!

  2. I know the sadness of having an injury that slows you down! When I trained for my 1st half marathon it was after my first loss and I suffered a stress fracture afterwards. I cried and cried to my husband that in not training (and wearing a huge boot), that my body was failing me again, it was insult to injury. Sounds like you are way more positive than I was!! Good for you for being proactive and taking good care of yourself. If you don't you can hurt yourself worse and be out for much longer! Good luck on your next race! Running feels so good, once you realize you can do it!!!

  3. I really hope you heal quickly.

  4. Darn injuries! Been through that frustration and its not fun. Take your time to rehab your back and mend that glute. And you will be back on track before you know it :)

    Feel better soon

    Much Love,

  5. I get back pain too when running a lot...what did the therapist recommend you do from here on out to prevent this sort of thing? You stretch before and after your runs, right?

  6. Sorry you had to sit out your race!
