Trip to the Doggie ER

Boy, did we have an interesting Saturday night! We were having a relaxing evening watching a movie upstairs in the Bonus Room.  Josh decided to go downstairs to refill his drink and found the dogs devouring a prescription pill bottle!

The Mystery:

Disintegrated bottle of Prevacid and no pills left to be found.

That bottle may have been child-proof but it wasn’t doggie proof!

The Suspects:

Seven and Romie.

But who did it?  Who ate the pills?  And most importantly, are they going to be okay???

When Josh saw this, he immediately called the Vet Hospital.  They told us to come in for an exam and to see how this can be treated.  When we got there we were instructed to call the Animal Poison Control Hotline* to get advice from a toxicologist on the treatment plan.  The exam showed that they were both stable, and they were acting pretty normal except for the fact that they were very nervous to be at the vet.

The Vet and Toxicologist determined that Prevacid is probably the least harmful prescription medication that a dog could ingest.  (THANK GOD!!)   They didn’t ingest enough for it to be really harmful, so further treatment wasn’t needed.  Before we left the Doggie ER they were given an anti-nausea shot and we were instructed to keep an eye on them.  For the next 3-5 days we have to watch to see if they pass any parts of the pill bottle.

IMG_0301 When we got home the dogs were exhausted!  Romie was happy to go to bed and get some shuteye.  I, on the other hand, was a very concerned Mommy, and slept on the couch downstairs to be near them.  I checked on them often, and luckily, they both had a good night’s sleep and seem to have felt even better in the morning!

I’m soooo thankful for my little Seven and Romie.  They are irreplaceable!

Doggie Photo Shoot

IMG_8038

I’ve been playing around with my new camera a little, so today I did a mini doggie photo shoot.  I am loving this camera so far!  Every picture I take just looks so good.  I don’t have to do any editing to them!

Grrrr!

Awe, my sweet Romes!

Seven’s not to big into getting her picture taken.  She refuses to look at the camera, so I had to settle for this profile shot.

I tricked her into looking at the camera… Ha! I got you Seven!

More Doggie Drama

Romie decided she needed to go back to the vet last week, as if her recent cow incident wasn’t enough!  I started to notice something was wrong when Romie started rubbing her eyes a lot, and then I noticed that her eye was all red and had a hazy look to it.
I called the vet, and (of course) they advised me to bring her in that day.

Seven came along for the ride to be a supportive big sister to Romie.

It turns out that Romie got some sort of a scratch on her eye, and she has a Corneal Ulcer!  Poor baby!

When she’s unsupervised, she’s supposed to wear this cone.  She’s also back on anti-inflammatory meds and eye drops 4 times a day.  Her prognosis is good; there doesn’t seem to be any complications.  Romie should be as good as new in a few days.

Cow vs. Romie

Josh's tweet summed it up perfectly...

Cow vs. Romie. Cow won, but Romie is OK.

This past weekend at my parent's house, my little 10 pound, fearless Romes decided to hop the fence and join the neighboring herd of cows.

She's tried this once before, but I was able to call her back before she got too far in. Well, not this time. There were a bunch of people at my parents house and we were all standing around visiting. I looked over and little Romie was standing among 10 cows and started to taunt one of them (like she does with Seven when she wants to play). The cow then nudged her with his big head, and Romie rolled. Right as the cow was about to pick up his big hoof to kick her, Romie got on her feet, and made her way back through the barbwire fence!

She ran back to us crying and I thought that she had been seriously hurt and was still in shock. I was SO freaked out! She was whimpering and crying while Josh held her to give her an exam. After looking her over very carefully, she seemed OK, just really shaken up.

It wasn’t until 4 days later, that I noticed that Romie would whimper a little when I picked her up. It really concerned me, so we jetted off to the vet to get her checked out. I was so relieved to learn that Romie was fine after all. The vet thinks that she is probably just bruised and a little sore.

Now, Romie is taking some anti-inflammatory meds, and will be laying low for the next week. We are SO lucky that she is ok! I don’t even want to think about what would have happened if that darn cow had actually kicked her! From now on, I will be keeping a closer eye on Seven and Romie while we are around those cows!

Doggie Vaca

Before we left for our Christmas Vacation, I stressed over where Seven and Romie would go. It's a lot to ask someone to watch two dogs at once, and most of the people that we would ask were all leaving for Christmas too. We looked into boarding, but I wasn't happy with that because they would be sitting in kennels 24/7 while we were gone. UNTIL... I found the perfect solution! The Trump Hotel for doggies (aka The Lodge)!

It was perfect! Seven and Romie got to room together in a Junior Suite. They had their own beds with doggie bedding and a flat screen TV to watch The Animal Planet on, and their own private lanai! In addition to that, they had three 30 minute play times each day in the courtyard with the other dogs. They fed them gourmet dog food, and got nightly treats. On their last day they went to the spa for a head to toe grooming. I don't know about you, but it sounds so good that I'd stay there! The Lodge also encouraged me to call and check in on them as much as I wanted. So... I called a few times to get the full report. :)

They were so excited to see me when I picked them up. I wish they could tell me all about their stay, because I'm sure it was fun!

moo-cow

I took this photo Sunday at my parent's house. A group of cows came into the pasture next door, and Romie ran up to them to greet them! Even though Romie is only 10 pounds, she thinks she's the size of a cow! She touched noses with them, and even let one lick her until half of her face was completely wet! It was so funny to watch!

happy 1st birthday!

Isn't Romie cute?! My friend, Lauren B, first gave me the idea to use baby clothes as dog shirts instead of buying those overpriced shirts the pet stores sell. Today, I picked up a cheap newborn-size onesie at Target for Romie's Birthday. It was only $3, so I knew Josh wouldn't mind me spending unnecessary money on my dog. When I got home, I cut off the bottom of the onesie, and broke out my sewing machine. I hemmed up the end to make it a cute little shirt and I'm really happy with it!

I know this is pretty pathetic, but at least I am resourceful in my spare time! J

Happy 1st Birthday, Romie!

bad hair day?

Poor Seven had a bad experience at the groomers yesterday. Apparently, when you say "groom" the dog, they think shave off all their hair!

All happy furry and cute

At least she's still smiling :)
They left her tail furry
Shaved her up to her ears!
